L'amour au temps des zombies

Il ne reste plus grand chose du monde de Jimbo, 13 ans, après l'épidémie qui a transformé la population en morts-vivants. Ses parents sont morts, la ville est dévastée et ses copains sont des crétins dont l'unique passe-temps est de torturer un zombie dans un jardin. Seul lueur d'espoir, Sarah Jane, la jeune fille dont il est fou amoureux... mais, lorsque les morts reviennent sur terre, comment faire encore l'apprentissage de l'amour ?





Venu d'Australie, pays toujours novateur en matière de cinéma fantastique (le magnifique Wolf Creek), I love Sarah Jane de Spencer Susser est une perle du film de zombies et ne devrait pas tarder à devenir culte. Le zombie est ici moins le centre du film, qu'un problème de l'adolescence parmi d'autres. I love Sarah Jane peut être vu comme le croisement entre les univers de Larry Clark, d'Harmony Korine et de George Romero, sans jamais tomber dans la parodie.
De Clark (Kids) il reprend les bandes d'adolescents cruels, organisés en bandes primitives ; du Gummo d'Harmony Korine, l'univers chaotique au sens premier du mot: le monde est mis en pièce et ne plus trouve plus son énergie que dans la haine et la violence. De Romero, Spencer Susser conserve l'hyperréalisme appliqué à des personnages fantastiques et l'art de la synecdoque : un seul zombie dans un jardin, au maquillage étonnamment crédible, fait croire à une catastrophe mondiale.
Et Sarah Jane dans tout ça ? Lorsque la jeune fille aura abrégé les souffrances de son père transformé en mort-vivant, lorsqu'elle aura réglé son compte au petit chef sadique de la bande d'ados, elle retournera regarder la télévision sur son canapé. Jimbo la regarde s'éloigner en souriant : aucun doute, il aime Sarah Jane.

Love in the Time of Zombies

Nothing much is left in the world of 13 year-old Jimbo, after the epidemic which turned the entire population into living-dead. His parents are dead, the town is devastated, and his mates are idiots whole sole way of passing the time is to torture a zombie out in the garden. His only source of hope is Sarah Jane, the young girl with whom he is madly in love … but, when the dead walk again upon the earth, how is anyone able to experience love’s apprenticeship?

From Australia, a country always innovative in the area of fantasy-horror cinema (see the magnificent Wolf Creek), Spencer Susser’s I Love Sarah Jane is a gem of a zombie film, and one that will quickly become a cult. The film’s centre is less the matter of zombies than the problem of adolescence (among other problems). I Love Sarah Jane can be seen as a mixture of the universes of Larry Clark, Harmony Korine and George Romero, without ever falling into parody.

From Clark, it takes the cruel gangs of adolescents, organised into primitive tribes; from Korine’s Gummo, a chaotic universe, in the primary sense of that word: the world has been pulled apart and can only finds its energy in hatred and violence. From Romero, Susser retains a hyperrealism applied to fantastic characters, and the art of the synecdoche: only one zombie in a garden, plus astonishingly real make-up, makes us believe in a global catastrophe.

And Sarah Jane’s place in all this? Once she has fixed up the suffering of her father (now one of the living-dead), and settled matters with the sadistic little head of the teen gang, she simply goes back to watching the TV from her couch. Jimbo gazes at her in repose and smiles: no doubt about it, he loves Sarah Jane.
